  • Botulinum toxin, rebranded as “Botox” in 1992, is a naturally occurring protein derived from bacteria which can be deadly in large quantities, however very small doses of a specific strain of Botox has been proved to be very effective for treating medical conditions such as chronic migraines, bladder weaknesses, muscle disorders and severe underarm sweating. It wasn’t until 2002 that the FDA officially approved Botox for cosmetic use due to the positive effects on reducing lines and wrinkles.

  • When Botox is injected under the skin it stops the communication from the nerves to the muscle, temporarily paralysing the muscle. As the muscle cannot move, this reduces the effect of lines and wrinkles.

  • If you are looking for an anti-ageing solution to reduce lines and wrinkles, or even prevent them then Botox is an option. The fine expression lines you start to see in your 20’s will deepen with age so Botox is a great preventative measure even for younger people. If you suffer from frown lines, crows feet or are experiencing droopy brows then Botox could be the answer you are looking for.

  • Everyone’s pain threshold is different so you may or may not experience some discomfort during your treatment. The treated area will start to feel restricted and possibly “heavy”. Some people also experience headaches for a few days afterwards. A cool pack will be applied afterwards if you wish.

  • When administered by a trained practitioner, Botox subtly relaxes muscles without compromising facial expressions, providing a natural and refreshed look.

  • The effects of Botox are not immediate. You will not walk out of the salon wrinkle-free (booo I hear you cry). It will start to take effect over a few days with the full effect being seen after 2 weeks. The results last between 3-4 months depending on the individual.

  • Botox will not erase deeper lines and wrinkles. As it temporarily “freezes” the muscle which stops the skin from wrinkling in the first place, it is more preventative than restorative. Therefore the earlier you start getting Botox the better.

Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking blood thinning medication at least 48 hours prior to treatment.

For best results, it’s important that 4-6 hours after your appointment you do not bend forward, lie down, massage the treated area or do strenuous exercise for 24 hours as this could spread the Botox into unwanted areas and even increase bruising.

Overall Botox is a fantastic anti-ageing treatment where the benefits far outweigh the negatives and is more common than you may think
